Acropora spp. (SPS Superstars)

The “Race Cars” of the Reef Tank

Acropora are the pinnacle of reef-keeping: thin-branching, table, staghorn, bottlebrush, or smooth-skin forms that build the colorful reef crest you see in coffee-table books. Famous morphs include Oregon Tort, PC Rainbow, WWC Yellow Tips, Miyagi Tort, Joe the Coral, TGC Cherry Bomb, ASD Rainbow Milli – the list is endless and expensive.
Not for absolute beginners, but once your tank is 12+ months old and stable, Acros are the ultimate reward.

Why Acropora Are Addictive

  • Insane colors under proper blues (some glow like neon signs)
  • Fast linear growth – 6–12+ inches per year when dialed in
  • Huge variety: thin branch, staghorn, tabling, encrusting, milli
  • Turn a mature tank into a true shallow-water reef-crest

Natural Habitat

Shallow, wave-pounded reef crests worldwide:

  • Indonesia, Australia (Great Barrier Reef), Fiji
  • Solomon Islands, Philippines, Red Sea
Found in the top 15–30 ft where light is nuclear and flow is chaotic.

Recommended Tank Placement & Flow

  • Placement: Top 1/3 of rockwork – the brighter the better
  • Light: HIGH – 300–500+ PAR (T5/LED hybrids or strong LEDs only)
  • Flow: STRONG, random, chaotic (think washing machine)
✓ Branches should shimmer, tips almost white from flow
✗ Laminar or weak flow = RTN or STN death

Feeding & Nutrients

  • Ultra-low nutrients (ULNS) or light nutrient systems both work
  • Amino acids & coral snow 2–3× week = better color
  • Broadcast baby brine or Reef-Roids for polyp extension at night

Common Challenges & Crash Triggers

  1. RTN / STN (Rapid or Slow Tissue Necrosis)
White skeleton appears overnight or over days. Usually alkalinity swing >0.5 dKH, temperature spike, or pests.
  2. Browning Out
Too little light/flow or high nutrients → muddy brown color.
  3. AEFW (Acropora-Eating Flatworms)
Tiny beige worms + bite marks. Treat with Bayer dip or in-tank Flatworm Stop.
  4. Red Bugs / Acro Bugs
Microscopic tegastes – coral stops growing. Treat with Interceptor or Dog de-wormer.
  5. Alk Burn
New frags turn white at tips if alk >10 dKH.

Final Tips for Beginners Wanting Acros

  • Wait until your tank is rock-solid stable
  • Start with hardy species: A. tenuis, A. echinata, A. millepora, A. yongei
  • Buy aquacultured frags that are already colorful in the seller’s system
  • Acclimate slowly to your lighting (2–4 weeks under screen or low on rack)
  • Test twice a day when adding first frags – one small swing can wipe a collection

Acropora are the end-game coral. Nail the parameters, lighting, and flow, and you’ll have a tank that looks like a slice of the Great Barrier Reef. Crash them once and you’ll learn more in a week than in years of keeping softies. Welcome to the dark side!
