“Octopus Coral” or “Grape Coral”

Frogspawn is the chubby, bubbly cousin in the Euphyllia family. Its rounded, bulbous tips look like clusters of grapes or tiny octopus tentacles, giving the tank an almost cartoon-like charm. Comes in gorgeous colors: neon green, purple tip, gold, teal, rainbow, and legendary strains like “Ultra Frog” or “Dragon Soul”.
Super beginner-friendly, grows quickly, and is one of the hardiest LPS corals you can buy!

Why Reefers Love Frogspawn

  • Fat, puffy polyps that extend 2–4 inches and gently wave
  • Comes in Wall and Branching forms (walls can become huge show pieces)
  • Extremely forgiving and fast-growing
  • Less aggressive than Torch or Hammer (sweepers are shorter)
  • Polyps look amazing under actinic/blue lighting at night

Natural Habitat

Indo-Pacific reefs:

  • Indonesia (main source)
  • Australia (very hardy strains)
  • Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands
Found in protected lagoons and reef crests in moderate light and turbulent flow at 15–80 ft (5–25 m).

Recommended Tank Placement & Flow

  • Placement: Middle to lower third of the rockwork
  • Light: Low to moderate (80–200 PAR) – they brown out in very bright light
  • Flow: Moderate to strong random/turbulent flow
✓ Polyps should dance and bounce happily
✗ Avoid strong direct blast (polyps will retract and stay skinny)

Feeding

Not required but highly recommended for faster growth and fatter polyps:

  • Target feed 1–3× per week: mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, Reef-Roids, Benereef, or LPS pellets
  • Feed at night with lights off – the mouths open wide and grab food instantly

Common Challenges & Diseases

  1. Brown Jelly Infection
Same as Torch/Hammer – brown slimy goo. Act fast: turkey-baster it off + iodine dip. Remove dead heads if spreading.
  2. Polyps Stay Skinny or Retracted
Usually too much direct flow or new-tank stress. Give it 1–2 weeks and proper flow.
  3. Base Recession
Low alkalinity or pests. Keep alk 8+ and dip all new frags.
  4. Pests
    • Euphyllia-eating nudibranchs (tiny white eggs on skeleton)
    • Flatworms
→ Always quarantine & dip (CoralRx, Revive, or Bayer)

Final Tips for Beginners

  • Frogspawn has shorter sweeper tentacles than Torch/Hammer → 4–6 inches spacing is usually enough
  • Australian & aquacultured pieces are bulletproof
  • Drip acclimate slowly (1–2 hours)
  • Once settled, they split heads every 6–12 months – free frags for friends!
  • Looks incredible next to (but not touching) Torch and Hammer for the classic “Euphyllia garden”

If you want an easy, colorful, flowing LPS that practically takes care of itself, Frogspawn is the perfect starter Euphyllia. Most people’s first coral success story starts here!
