Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor)
BTA – The Clownfish Magnet
Bubble Tip Anemones are the iconic, colorful, bulb-tipped anemones that every reefer dreams of pairing with a clownfish. When happy, their tentacles turn into perfect little bubbles or long flowing strings – sometimes both on the same nem! Colors include classic rose, rainbow, black widow, hellfire, Chicago sunburst, and insane ultra-grade “Dragon” or “Galaxy” that can cost hundreds of dollars.
Beginner-friendly IF you give them stability and light.
Why Everyone Wants a BTA
- Clownfish go absolutely nuts for them (instant “Finding Nemo” moment”)
- Bulb tips can get huge (up to 12–18 inches across in big tanks)
- Multiplies naturally – one can become ten in 1–2 years
- Way hardier than carpet or magnificent anemones
- Looks incredible under blue light at night
Natural Habitat
Indo-Pacific and Red Sea:
-
Australia, Indonesia, Fiji, Solomon Islands
Usually in shallow, bright lagoons or attached to rocks in strong flow at 3–60 ft.
Recommended Tank Placement & Flow
-
Placement: High on the rockwork (they love to climb to the brightest spot)
6–12 inches from the surface - Light: Moderate to VERY strong (200–400+ PAR) – they bleach in low light
-
Flow: Moderate to strong, random/turbulent
✓ Tentacles should wave gently
✗ Too little flow = mouth gaping and death
✗ Direct powerhead blast = shredded tentacles

Feeding – They are PIGS
Feed 2–4 times per week for fat, colorful nems:
- Silversides, mysis, brine shrimp, krill, lancefish, raw shrimp from grocery
- Spot-feed directly into the mouth with tongs or Julian’s Thing
- Clownfish will feed it for you once hosted!
Common Challenges & Problems
-
Wandering Phase
New BTAs walk for 1–4 weeks looking for the perfect spot. They WILL sting corals on the way.
Fix: Give it a rock island or let it settle. -
Mouth Gaping / Deflating
Bad water quality or too little flow/light. Check nitrates & increase flow. -
Bleaching
Too little light or sudden light increase. Slowly raise PAR over weeks. -
Stringy (non-bubble) Tentacles
Totally normal – they switch between bubble and stringy depending on flow/light/food. -
Powerhead Death
They love to suicide into pumps. Cover all intakes with foam or mesh!
Final Tips for Beginners
- Buy a tank-raised or aquacultured BTA (way hardier than wild ones)
- Start with a small–medium (3–6 inch) specimen – giants are pickier
- Add clownfish AFTER the nem is settled (they stress it less)
- Expect splitting every 6–18 months – free clones!
- Never buy a bleached white one thinking it will “color up” – most don’t recover
Get a healthy Bubble Tip Anemone, give it bright light, stable water, and regular food, and you’ll have the ultimate clownfish condo that grows, splits, and looks amazing for years!
